We are in the midst of early voting for the primary elections here in Texas (May 14-22). The turnout will likely be very low as a result of the fact that the Republican nomination for President of the United States is essentially over. This presents an opportunity for those who choose to participate because a relatively few people will have a large impact on the choice that the Republican and Democratic parties make in nominating candidates for the fall election.

It is not uncommon for me to have conversations with fellow home schoolers who tell me that they don’t like politics and the nasty, negative elements that are so often prominent in that process. I try to help them understand that our success in defending home schooling and parental rights in the next Texas Legislative Session will be directly related to our success in this election cycle. THSC legislative liaison, Paul Hastings, confirms that our success in the next legislative session will be directly proportionate to our success in this primary.

Now is the time for those of us who really want to protect innocent children and parents by passing the Texas Parental Rights Restoration Act (TPRRA) to get involved. We must get to the polls and vote for candidates who believe that parents have a fundamental constitutional right to direct the care, control, and upbringing of our children. We must get our like-minded friends and family to vote as well.

You can go to our Primary Election Endorsements page to see the candidates that THSC PAC has endorsed because they share in our support for parental rights and home schooling. You can visit votetexeas.gov to find out where to vote in your area. You can donate to THSC PAC to help us elect legislative and judicial candidates that will support parental rights and home schooling.

I was impressed this morning, as I read through 1 Samuel 14, with the fact that Jonathan and his armor bearer went up against the Philistines while Saul “tarried under a pomegranate tree.” Jonathan’s words of faith ring in my ears as a call to us today, “…it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.”

By Brian A Howey
U.S. Sen. Richard G. Lugar’s iconic career of elected public service appears to be in great jeopardy. A Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll conducted Monday and Tuesday shows that Lugar is trailing Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock 48-38% in Indiana’s Republican Senate primary. That head-to-head figure includes so-called “leaners,” who could conceivably change their minds in the final 72 hours of the campaign. Without the leans, Mourdock still leads 43-35%.

EDITORIAL: More phony job numbers – Obama brags as joblessness reaches record high of 11 percent
By The Washington Times
The White House crowed on Friday about the unemployment rate dropping a 10th of a percent. At the same time, the number of people out of the labor force reached a record high. The Obama administration can report all the funny numbers it wants, but the American people know in their guts that things are getting much worse.

By Sean Lengell
If longtime Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana loses his Republican primary Tuesday — which polls show is highly possible — several factors invariably will be blamed for his downfall: His advanced age (80); the aggressive campaign of his challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock; and the lawmaker’s moderate views, which increasingly rub against a party pulling to the political right.

The Romney campaign has released a good new infographic detailing the truth about Obama’s promised “green economy” job gains.

The Media and Barack Obama’s Pauline Kael Moment on Gay Marriage
Posted by Erick Erickson
If you listen to Barack Obama’s statement to ABC News yesterday you’ll hear something not reflected in all the transcripts that went out yesterday. He said his administration gave up the legal fight to defend the Defense Against Marriage Act. It’s actually the Defense Of Marriage Act.

Obama Caves to Gay Demands, Endorses “Marriage”
By Gary L. Bauer
President Obama just told ABC News that he now supports same-sex marriage. Surprised? Didn’t think so. Obama is no doubt hoping to energize his leftwing base. And he is betting this will help him to re-energize the youth vote this November. But in fact he may have just lost the presidency.

House Republicans try to block Obama’s rifle rule
By Dan Freedman
House Republicans, accusing President Barack Obama of waging a war on gun owners, plan to cut off funding for an rule requiring firearms dealers in border states to report multiple sales of certain rifles.

A Terrible, No Good, Awful Night for Barack Obama
One initial point to ponder: if the No-H8 campaign tries to fire up in North Carolina as the No-A1 campaign, people will wonder why they are campaigning against steak sauce. Probably won’t happen. North Carolina did not pass a ban on gay marriage as the media reports. Rather they refused to allow their definition of marriage to be changed. The marriage definition was put into law years ago, but with an onslaught of judicial activists, the voters in North Carolina decided to shut down any further consideration of the issue.

Paul forges ahead with weekend victories
By Richard S. Dunham
If the Republican primary race is over, nobody has bothered to tell Ron Paul. Even as the national media has declared Mitt Romney the inevitable GOP presidential nominee to take on President Barack Obama, the Texas congressman with the highly organized army of never-say-die loyalists surprised the Republican front-runner by sweeping three state conventions in the past weekend.

Obama zigs as Biden zags on gay marriage – President ‘comfortable’ under rising pressure
By Dave Boyer
President Obama is “comfortable” with full legal rights for same-sex couples, but still doesn’t support gay marriage, his spokesman said Monday as the administration scrambled to clarify comments by Vice President Joseph R. Biden in support of such unions.

GOP foiled as funds flow to Planned Parenthood
By Paige Winfield Cunningham
Newly empowered Republicans in states across the country are pushing to kill public contracts with Planned Parenthood, only to find their efforts blocked by the Obama administration and federal courts.

The sad story of a home school mom who lost her children in a temporary order in a divorce case in a small, rural county in Texas continues. For those who are not familiar with the case, the couple had been married for eleven years and home schooled for many years, all with the approval of the father. When he decided that he wanted a divorce, the airline pilot told his wife that his parents “own the courthouse” and “We will take the children from you, and there is nothing you can do.”

The new Republican judge seemed to confirm that assertion when he called home school observers in the courtroom a mob and then gave the children to the father, even though he travels two to three weeks per month, saying he was “more stable.” While the judge denied the request of the paternal grandparents to be a part of the suit, he said that when the father traveled, they should have the children. Most of the testimony by the father and his parents and their attorneys during these hearings focused on the fact that this mother home schooled her children and somehow that was not good for them.

The mother had no choice but to move back to the small community and seek employment while she asked the judge for “expanded visitation and the right of first refusal” so that she might see her children more than twice a month on weekends. While the judge finally assented to this, he refused to require the father to make funds available to the mother for her legal fees, even though the father continues to use community property from the marriage for his legal fees.

In a recent hearing, the trial date for a jury trial was moved to September, and it became apparent that the paternal grandparents are subsidizing the legal representation of their son in this matter and are keeping some of the children in their home on a regular basis. While a jury trial appears to be the best way for this mother to regain her children based on the recent rulings of this judge, her family does not have the kind of resources that the “owners of the courthouse” have.

It is unfortunate that a fit, godly parent can lose their children because someone else has more money and can find a judge who seems to believe that home schoolers are a mob and home schooling is a detriment to children. Or…it could simply be that he is biased with regard to his political future. Either way, THSC plans to help with the legal expenses of this mother not only because what is happening to her is outrageous, but we cannot allow home schooling to be the basis on which a child is removed from a fit parent no matter where they live in Texas. If you would like to be part of the effort to help, you can make a tax-deductible contribution to the THSC Parental Rights Litigation Fund (PRLF).

Tea party sympathizers continue shelling Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana as they work to defeat him in next week’s primary, which is shaping up as the premier chance for the political movement to capture a senior Republican scalp in this year’s elections.

Last night in Wisconsin the state Republican Party tried a few parliamentary maneuvers to drive tea party members from the ranks of the GOP. For reasons I cannot begin to fathom, the Wisconsin GOP seems willing to sacrifice tea party energy in the Scott Walker recall in order to save Tommy Thompson’s Senate bid.

Norman Ornstein is the in house pet liberal at the American Enterprise Institute who they let out of his cage once in a while to lament the free market, conservatives, and the like. I’m not sure why groups like the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute ever allow their supposed scholars to team up with the Brookings Institute, but whenever they do it results in intellectual underwear stains for both organizations.

Barack Obama says he agrees with Abraham Lincoln (you could ask him) that America is “the exceptional nation,” a nation unique in a world of moral squalor, a beacon of hope for the “tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” But sometimes cold pragmatism demands the exceptional nation make exceptions.

Americans witnessed a bizarre made-for-TV event Tuesday night. President Obama travelled 14,000 miles to Afghanistan to engage in a midnight marathon of election-year photo-ops. Never has U.S. national security been so twisted to fit a personal political agenda.

The President Has a List – Barack Obama attempts to intimidate contributors to Mitt Romney’s campaign.
By Kimberley A. Strassel
Try this thought experiment: You decide to donate money to Mitt Romney. You want change in the Oval Office, so you engage in your democratic right to send a check.

In a Thursday night forum in Houston among candidates vying to succeed U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz picked up where he left off after a Dallas debate last month, blistering Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, the front-runner.

Will Texas Supreme Court race hinge on the name Smith or Willett?
By Linda P. Campbell
You just have to roll your eyes with an OMG! when Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett says stuff like this: “People always comment on the sheer ferocity of the paper flow at the Supreme Court, and that’s certainly true. If anything, the biggest surprise is how swiftly it confirmed for me how metabolically hardwired I am for the cloistered, contemplative, cerebral and nerdy life of Supreme Court judging.”

By Brian Chasnoff
A startling moment emerges at the end of an appeal filed this week in which Attorney General Greg Abbott fights doggedly on behalf of Texas to exclude Planned Parenthood clinics from participating in a Medicaid waiver program for low-income women.

Establishment Bona Fides
By Andrew Kerr
A new group is purporting to rate lawmakers as conservatives, yet their results are surprising. As the Dallas Morning News noted, “establishment Republicans” who vote badly can claim a conservative rating. It signals the strength of the conservative movement in Texas that philosophically weak legislators are looking for help covering up their representational records.

By Michael Quinn Sullivan
As a trial lawyer and politician, Todd Smith says whatever people want to hear. Too bad for them that he’s saying different things. The problem for Todd Smith is that folks are starting to compare notes about what he says… and none of it is good for Texas.

By Chuck Lindell
Texas cannot proceed with plans to exclude Planned Parenthood from a health and contraceptive care program for low-income women, a federal judge ruled Monday.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday several moderate Democrats went down in flames in Pennsylvania, continuing a trend that has escalated since 2008. Liberals do not want moderate Democrats in their caucus.

An untold story today following yesterday’s Pennsylvania primaries is what a bad, bad night it was for Planned Parenthood.

Yesterday on Laura Ingraham’s radio show, she asked Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell about a recent Roll Call article that framed me as one of the loud leaders of conservatives opposed to Mitch McConnell. The Senator from Kentucky responded that he had never heard of me and I did not have an audience.

This weekend, a video produced by Free Market America went live on YouTube — and it is racking up nationwide hits. Deservedly so. The Earth Day-timed message is compelling and extremely relevant this campaign season.

McMillan Group International wrote on their Facebook page yesterday that Bank of America no longer wants their business? Why? Because of the nature of the business: guns.

I’m not a big fan of the NRA at the upper strata of lobbying. It plans it safe to maintain the veneer of bipartisanship, it has to be poked and prodded to get involved with hot button issues, and it frequent tries to take credit for the work of other organizations and also let others take the fall.
